World Turtle Day Celebrations

On May 23rd we celebrated World Turtle Day! This annual holiday, held on May 23rd, brings together conservationists, scientists, and turtle enthusiasts from around the globe in celebration (or should we say shell- ebration) of turtles of all kind.

This year members of the TC staff spent Turtle Day at the Santa Barbara Zoo book signing event for The Book of Turtles. Author, Sy Montgomery, and artist, Matt Patterson, have partnered together to create this beautiful book that dives into the wonderful world of turtles and tortoises, describes the amazing ways that they have evolved, and illustrates some of their unique behaviors. Matt’s artwork is featured throughout the book which provides readers with lifelike drawings of various chelonian species.

The TC was thrilled to host Sy and Matt while they were on the last stop of their book tour. They were in heaven meeting the variety of species that we house at the TC, many of which are featured in their book.

Our giant tortoises enjoy a special treat for World Turtle Day

Members of the TC team hosted a table at The Book of Turtles event at the Santa Barbara Zoo where Sy and Matt spoke passionately about the inspirations for the book, their work with turtles, and what guests could do to help turtles. It was a privilege to hear stories from such passionate, knowledgeable, and funny naturalists.

Theres no better way to spend World Turtle Day then connecting with others that share the same passion for these incredible animals- except of course spending some time with the turtles themselves. Our Galapagos (Chelonoidis niger) and Aldabra (Aldabrachelys gigantea) Tortoises received a special treat: a spread of some of their favorite snacks including lettuce, hibiscus, papaya, cabbage, and cactus.
