Our conservation center recently celebrated the hatching of eight Impressed Tortoises (Manouria impressa): a species listed as endangered by the IUCN Redlist.

The Turtle Conservancy is the only AZA-accredited facility in the United States currently breeding Impressed Tortoises, making each hatchling a significant step forward for the species’ future.

In the wild, Impressed Tortoises inhabit mountainous bamboo and evergreen forests across Asia. Their specialized habitat, unique diet, and secretive nature make them exceptionally challenging to care for in captivity. At our center, adults are housed in a greenhouse designed to replicate their natural environment. These tortoises are mushroom connoisseurs and show a clear preference for oyster mushrooms over other kinds offered. Successful breeding is a result of the specialized care the adult impressed tortoises receive at the TC.

Welcome to the world little ones!
